Research was undertaken to investigate the possibility of operating a multicavity magnetron at values of electrical and magnetic field near the characteristic values. This would make possible the scaling of the magnetron to very short wavelengths before encountering difficulties with anode heating and magnetic field limitations. The essential change in design for low field operation is the use of a small cathode diameter. An account is given of a familiar theoretical concept of ordinary magnetron operation and this is related to the operation at low fields. Electron trajectories are calculated for low field conditions. The theoretical concept of low field operation is in general agreement with experimental results obtained at this laboratory. Experimental results are given for an 18 segment anode. It is essential that a cut-off curve be obtained to allow for low field oscillations. The violation of the Hull cut-off relation at high voltage places a limitation on the voltage at which it is possible to design low field magnetrons. (Author)

Although this work does not yield a complete mapping of the field distribution associated with the assumed model certain conclusions can be drawn from the general trends put in evidence by this study: (1) The field intensity within the coil exhibits two main influences, one due to the proximity of the adjacent loops (near field) and the other due to the collective action of all other loops. An example of the above statement would be the field intensity along the axis. The periodic structure of the current distribution would be reflected in the periodic variation of the intensity with gradual decrease in amplitude as the end of the coil is approached. (2) The surface absolute value of H = 0 exists within or around the coil in cylindrical fashion with the effect of a discrete current distribution reflected in local protuberances. (Author)

This portion of the State of New Mexico's FY2002 DEPSCoR improved the capabilities of the University of New Mexico to participate in electromagnetic effects testing and analysis on electrical and biological systems through the development of a short-pulse, high-field intensity test structure in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. Our program focused on two inter-related areas: (1) the design, construction, and testing of a tunable pulser system, and (2) development of physical chemistry models that can be used to predict and explain phenomenology that we observe in these tests.

Energy extraction efficiency of a telescopic resonator is studied both analytically and numerically. It is shown that the usual Rigrod type calculations are not valid for systems with curved mirrors. A generalized Rigrod analysis is presented and compared with the numerical results. Experimental measurements related to NRL's laser systems are proposed based on the present modeling.
